Outreach Opportunities with the English Institute in Hinche, Haiti

Since April of 2017, HHE (Happy Haitian Education), formerly called Happy Haitian Productions English Institute, has provided English classes for Haitian students. Students have ranged in age of 10 to 30 years-old. The school is also expanding to provide classes for business professionals.
There are little to no resources for the students who attend this school. The lessons take place in a rented space that is approximately one-third of the size of an American classroom. The students are taught by Haitian teachers who are proficient in English or occasionally guest teachers from the United States or Canada. The school is seeking the help of English speakers who would like to be conversation partners with individuals or small groups in the Haitian English school. We use Zoom (instructions below) as an online tool for English conversations and video conferencing.
If you would like to be involved in helping Haitian students improve their English, feel free to contact Madame LeClair-Ash at [email protected]. For students from Cambridge High School, hours of service doing these remote conversations will count toward French Honor Society requirements as well as Global Service requirements for the International Skills Diploma Seal. If you are a student from a high school other than Cambridge, please ask your teachers and club supervisors if this volunteer work will count for the hours that you are serving. If your teachers have any questions, they may contact me at [email protected].

Step 1: Use the SignUp Genius to sign up for a time to be a conversation partner.
On the SignUp Genius, you will also see the Zoom link, which you will use for your conversation. See your Sponsor for access to Signup GeniusStep 2: You will need to use Zoom from your laptop and use your webcam and microphone to communicate with the Haitians. While some of our American classrooms allow us to keep our cameras off, you are in communication with foreigners and they need to see you in order to learn English.
Step 3: Helpful hints for leading online conversation and cultural exchange.
The helpful hints are even more important if you are engaging in English conversations with beginning students of English. |
